H. Carol Olate
Carol Olate was born in Chile, the oldest of three, she came to the United States at the age of 7 to New York City. A first generation college student, she attended State University of New York at Plattsburgh in where she received a Bachelors in TV Productions/Business Professional Studies. She recently graduated with a Masters in Education- Teacher Leadership from the University of St. Thomas in Houston Texas.
She worked for Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) for three years as a Traffic Manager & Master Control Supervisor before moving to Houston and joining Teach For America (TFA). Through TFA she taught for two years Bilingual Pre-K for 3-5 year olds and a summer ESL Kindergarten readiness class at Gulfton Promise Head Start. Through TFA, she has also worked as a Corps Member Advisor (CMA) for their 2013 Institute, where she mentored and coached twelve first year teachers who will be teaching in Houston's public schools.
She is currently working as a Pre-K 3 founding teacher and Grade Level Chair at a new KIPP school in the third ward of Houston, TX, one of the top 10 poorest and most under-served cities in the United States. She recently was awarded a Kinder Teaching Award of Excellence for the work that she did with her students and parents.
Her goals are for one day to be a school leader of a high performing dual language elementary school that serves black and Latino students. And eventually be a part of a high performing, culturally relevant, community-focused network of schools that serve students and their families across the U.S.
